ANDY MELENDREZ HELPS SECURE LARGEST AWARD IN RIVERSIDE’S HISTORY – $31.2 MILLION
On Friday, June 26 2020, The Strategic Growth Council voted to approve the Eastside Climate Collaborative and the City of Riverside’s collective grant application for $31.2 million. This award is a part of a three-year effort led by Councilmember Andy Melendrez’ office, whose successful application beat larger communities in neighboring counties.
“Representing the Eastside for over 14 years, I’ve had to fight every day to ensure that our community receives its fair share and a respectable quality of life,” said Andy Melendrez.
“While some at City Hall turned a blind eye to our most vulnerable, we built partnerships, organized residents and worked alongside community leaders to look at the socio-economic barriers facing our community and bring about the change that our community deserved.”
These grants will fund Affordable Housing, Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure, Transit Rail Access – Bus Stops and Solar Walkways, Vine Street Mobility HUB, Free Bus Passes, Solar Installation, Urban Greening Projects, Community Engagement, Displacement Avoidance and various Workforce Development Initiatives. Community groups and Ward 2 residents developed an array of projects that convinced the Strategic Growth Council and proves that the Eastside has an innovative approach to enhancing the quality of life of residents.
“This is a historic moment and a testament of Andy Melendrez’ dedication to our community,” said Assemblymember Jose Medina. “As Riversiders, we know that we need to fight twice as hard as other metropolitan areas for our fair share. For three years Andy and his team applied for this grant –never giving up on our community, ignoring the odds, and delivering a big win. This is exactly why we need him as mayor.”
