ANDY MELENDREZ ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN FOR RIVERSIDE MAYOR

Riverside, CA – Riverside City Councilmember Andy Melendrez announced his campaign for Mayor today. Melendrez, who is currently serving his fourth term on the City Council, would be the first Latino or person of color to serve as Mayor in Riverside’s 135-year history. Incumbent Mayor Rusty Bailey is not expected to seek re-election.

In announcing his campaign, Melendrez stated:

“I’m running for Mayor to protect Riverside’s unique quality of life and make city government more responsive and transparent. I believe that my experiences as a City Councilmember and longtime local business owner give me a unique set of perspectives, and I am ready to take on the big problems – such as the homelessness crisis – that our city is facing. I am excited to announce my candidacy, and I am looking forward to the campaign ahead.”

Andy Melendrez was elected to Riverside’s City Council in 2006 and subsequently re-elected in 2009, 2013, and 2017. On the Council, he has earned a reputation as a passionate advocate for public safety, protected open space, and expanded opportunities for youth. Andy is a lifelong Riverside resident and has owned and operated a local vocational rehabilitation business for over 37 years. His long record of community involvement includes helping found both the Riverside Arts Academy and the Riverside Opera Camp.

Andy is a proud graduate of Riverside Poly High School and Riverside City College. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in educational counseling. His family has lived in Riverside for 109 years.
