Meet Councilmember Andy Melendrez
Andy Melendrez concerned about the direction of Riverside was encouraged to run for City Council in 2006. Since then he has shown his dedication towards improving the lives of all residents living in Riverside.
Andy is a lifetime resident with his family originally settling in Riverside in 1910. Having attended public schools beginning with Casa Blanca Elementary School and graduating from Riverside Poly High School. Andy would go on to obtain a degree from Riverside City College, and earn a B.A. in Sociology and an M.A. in Educational Counseling from Cal State San Bernardino. Andy has been self-employed as an expert witness and a Vocational Counselor for 35 years. In addition, he has invested in commercial and residential properties in the Inland Empire.
Andy has essentially reinvented Ward 2 which includes Sycamore Canyon, Canyon Crest, University Neighborhood, and the Eastside Community. Ward 2 now prides itself with having a new medical school on the University of California, Riverside campus, the soon to be constructed Clean Air Resources Board (CARB) which is expected to be a 400 million dollar investment, improved the quality of life in University Neighborhood by decreasing student housing, expanded activities at Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park by adding the Ameal Moore Nature Center. He is committed towards protecting the communities thus he opposed the construction of the Mega-Warehouse in Sycamore Canyon. His Ward includes 5 Elementary Schools, 8 Community Parks and 2 Recreational Community Centers. He works with local community leaders, residents, and schools to focus on improving access to services and educational opportunities for his residents in Ward 2.
Andy has been instrumental in the development of the new Nati Fuentes Child Care Center Facility, Johnny Sotelo Youth Opportunity Center, founder of the Riverside Arts Academy, established the Riverside Opera program, instrumental in assisting the HEAL Zone (Healthy Eating Active Living) in securing a 1 million dollar grant with Kaiser Permanente which was recently renewed. He supported the 1.6 Billion dollar investment in the Riverside Renaissance which rejuvenated downtown Riverside, Parks, the FOX Theater, the Bobby Bonds Sports Complex/ Cesar Chavez Community Center and Bordwell Park/ Stratton Center. He also supported the refurbishing and renewal of the Riverside Convention Center.
As your City Councilman, Andy will continue his commitment towards improving the communities quality of life, promote public safety, encourage the arts, develop new businesses and work to maintain a strong fiscal foundation.
